Dismissed From a Job in Selangor
Retrenched from a Selangor factory or pushed out of an office, with one deadline for both.
Selangor carries the largest workforce of any state. Factory floors in Shah Alam and Klang sit alongside the office towers of Petaling Jaya and the tech campuses of Cyberjaya.
A dismissal here can be a plant closure notice or a quiet restructuring memo. Both follow the same Section 20 process.
Two very different Selangor dismissals
Manufacturing plants around Shah Alam, Klang and the Port Klang logistics belt tend to let staff go through formal retrenchment exercises. These often affect many workers at once.
Office and tech workers in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Cyberjaya are more likely to face a single exit. It is often dressed up as poor performance or restructuring.
The reason your employer gives matters. It decides which page fits best, from retrenchment to poor performance dismissal.
Port Klang’s warehouse and logistics workforce is a third group worth naming. Shift changes and contract labour arrangements there raise their own questions about who your actual employer is.
Retrenchment and the selection question
A genuine retrenchment in a Selangor factory should still follow the usual practice.1 The most recently hired staff in the affected category go first.
If you were retrenched ahead of newer colleagues, that gap is worth raising. Higher earning staff in Cyberjaya offices are not excluded either.2
Where the case actually goes
Selangor has no Industrial Court branch of its own. A case from here goes to the Industrial Court, and JPPM can confirm which Industrial Court branch hears it.
Conciliation before that referral runs through the JPPM office for Selangor, headquartered in Shah Alam. Lawyers cannot represent either side at that meeting, so be ready to explain your own timeline clearly.3

Common questions
My factory in Shah Alam picked me for retrenchment. Can I ask why I was chosen over newer staff?
Yes. The usual principle is that the most recently hired staff in your category go first, and an employer needs a reason to depart from that order. Keep your hire date and any list of who was retrenched, since that comparison matters.
I earn a good salary at a Cyberjaya tech company. Does that put me outside this process?
No. The Section 20 route covers workmen regardless of a higher salary, even though some Employment Act protections are wage capped separately. A well paid Selangor employee can still bring an unfair dismissal claim.
Is there an Industrial Court branch in Selangor?
Selangor does not have its own Industrial Court branch, and JPPM can confirm which Industrial Court branch hears a case from the state. The JPPM office for Selangor still handles the conciliation stage before any referral.
