Retrenched From A Perak Job
Your Perak job was cut and you doubt why you were chosen.
Perak has factories and services in Ipoh, port-linked work around Manjung and small trading firms in Taiping. A retrenchment in any of them follows the same national rules.
What happens after you file in Perak
The first step is a written Section 20 representation to the Director General of Industrial Relations. JPPM then calls you and your former employer to conciliation.
If no deal is reached, the case goes to the Industrial Court, which has a branch in Ipoh. JPPM will confirm which branch hears your case.
How a retrenchment should run
A genuine redundancy needs a real business reason and a fair order of selection. That is conventionally last in, first out within the affected category.1
Be alert if a round of cuts near Manjung skipped more junior staff. Also check whether a closed department in Ipoh simply moved its work to another line under a new job title.
Separately from a Section 20 claim, the Employment Insurance System gives temporary help to a worker who loses a job involuntarily. Its claim should be made within its own 60 days.2
Getting help if you live outside Ipoh
A first message works the same from Manjung, Taiping or Teluk Intan. Only after an identified independent lawyer has contacted you and specifically requested the material, send your retrenchment letter, your last payslips and the names of anyone kept on in your role.
You still attend conciliation in person, so ask JPPM early where it will be held.
Your next step
Write down what happened at your Perak job in order, with a date for each event. Keep your termination letter and payslips.
Confirm your window with the deadline calculator, and look at your Employment Insurance System claim in the same week.
If you want a lawyer to act, request lawyer contact first; only after an identified independent lawyer has contacted you and specifically requested the material, send those papers and the date you were let go directly to that lawyer. They can review the facts and reply on whether and how they can take the claim forward.
If you want a lawyer to look at a retrenchment from your Perak job, send the date you were let go and what the employer told you. An independent employment lawyer serving Perak may review the facts and reply on whether and how they can act.

Common questions
My employer near the Manjung port retrenched me but kept a newer colleague doing the same work. Was that allowed?
Not without a reason. The usual principle is last in, first out within the same category of staff, and the employer must justify keeping the more junior worker.
I work in Taiping, away from Ipoh. Does that change how my claim is heard?
No. The same process applies, and JPPM confirms which Industrial Court branch hears a Taiping case.
Can I get any support while my retrenchment claim is being worked through?
Possibly. Separately from a dismissal claim, the Employment Insurance System gives temporary help after involuntary job loss, and the claim should be made within 60 days of termination.
