What A Mention At Court Means
You have a short court date coming up and are not sure what to expect.
A mention is a short court date, and it is far less daunting than a hearing.
What it means
It is a brief procedural appearance used to check the progress of filings, confirm timelines or set the date for the next step.
It is not where your dismissal is argued in full. That happens later, at the hearing, once both sides have completed their filings.
Why it matters to you
You do not usually need to present detailed evidence or arguments at a mention.
JPPM confirms which branch hears your case, whether that is the headquarters in Kuala Lumpur or one of the regional branches.1
Do you need to say much
Bring your case reference and any documents the court asked for, and be ready to confirm the status of your filings if asked.
The court may check progress on your cause papers and statement of case at a mention.
If you are unsure whether your original claim was filed on time, you can still check it on the deadline calculator.
If a mention date has been set for your claim and you want a lawyer to appear for you, an independent employment lawyer can review your court notice. They can tell you whether it is a case they can take on.

First contact: general facts only, such as date, location, employment status and a short summary. Keep documents private until an identified independent lawyer contacts you and specifically requests them.
Common questions
Do I need to speak much at a mention?
Usually not. A mention is procedural: it confirms filing progress or sets the next date, and your case is not argued in detail.
Can a mention be adjourned to a later date?
Yes. A mention can be adjourned while documents are still being prepared or exchanged, which is a normal part of the process, not a sign of a problem.
